Owner/Artist at Flippotential Custom Finishes in Wheelock, TX.

I began refinishing furniture over 25 years ago.  I was givien a cherished piece of family furniture, my grandmother's buffet.  With no experience whatsoever, I stripped and re-stained it, all in one weekend (yes I was single with no children back then)! And can I add that it looked pretty darn amazing? After that I was hooked!

Fast-forward to 2014.. I now have a husband and two teenagers.  I left corporate America and decided to pursue my dream (scaarrary)!  I was introduced to PAINTING furniture (whaat?? No way!!)! Almost three years later, Flippotential Custom Finishes has grown from a facebook page, to a booth, and now has pieces located in several locations in the Brazos Valley in Texas.

Many thanks to my family and friends who have given me support and cheered me on even when the future looked dismal, for without them, this crazy notion of mine would've fizzled out long ago. But more than that, I give praise and gratitude to God who guides and watches over me everyday!

Rust and Lace

By Melissa Flippin, Owner/Artist at Flippotential Custom Finishes in Wheelock, TX.

Winning Category

A family antique received a complete makeover. The body was first base coated with a mixture of GF Antique White and Driftwood milk paints (to prevent bleed throigh). I then painted in GF Antique white, slightly distressed, glazed with Van Dyke Brown and sealed with GF HP Topcoat

The drawer fronts were painted with MM iron paint. Then we did a raised stencil with AE Pearl Plaster, lightly tinted with GF Patina Green to create a subtle aqua color. Next, we sprayed MM Rust Activator and let it flow over the raised stencil, then sealed with HP Topcoat.

The sides of the box were first covered with gold, turquoise and copper gold-leafs. I then painted the gold leafs with copper, metal-reactive paint, leaving sections of the gold leafs exposed. I sprayed the surface with blue and green patina sprays, sprinkled some some iron paint and then sprayed with Rust activator.

The remainder of the box was painted with General Finishes Patina Green milk paint. I put additional turquoise gold-leaf on a few spots over the milk paint. I applied gold gold-leaf to the trim areas of the doors and drawers.
