Mixed Media Metallic Painting

By Melissa Flippin, Owner/Artist at Flippotential Custom Finishes in Wheelock, TX.

I decided to step out of my furniture box and pretend I was an artist for the day!

This painting was done on a 42” x 36” wrapped canvas. After priming, with the canvas laying flat, I randomly applied patches of Gold, Copper and Turquoise Leaf. Then I painted around the patches with MM Copper and Bronze metallic paints. I sprayed MM green and blue patinas. After the patinas started to react with the paints and the puddles begin to dry, I turned the canvas upright and let the remaining liquid run down.

Once completely dry, in random spots, I created a raised stencil pattern with iron paste (which is nothing more than MM iron paint that’s dried and crusted). I then sprayed those areas with MM rust activator. I then flicked Alcohol and Hydrogen Peroxide using a fly speck technique.  I chose not to seal as to let the rust paste continue to rust.  This painting of mixed media created a beautiful, metallic  textured effect.
