This is a small project that I do when I am doing a wood turning demonstration. This one is from a beautiful piece of spalted Florida maple that I got from a friend. The beautiful colors in this piece of Florida maple come from the spalting fungus that enters the wood and eats the sugars with the resulting streaks and color. The top rim was textured with a woodburner. This fungus does not deteriorate the wood. This Rolly-Polly rolls around until it finds just the right spot to stop. This wood the was headed to the landfil or someones fireplace. It is about 4" x4" by 1/16" thick.

Winning Category
I had a friend ask if I could turn her a wooden cake stand and I rounded up a piece of Florida cherry with this result. It was turned in two pieces and glued together. The Florida cherry has some of the most beautiful color and grain you will find and as it ages it gets even more patina and color. All of the wood that I use is recycled wood that was headed for my local landfill or fireplace. Even my scraps are used by a friend to smoke BBQ. the size was around 11" in Diameter and 6" tall.

Carved Florida Cherry Vessel
By Artisticturning, Owner
Winning Category
This is a vessel that follows my typical timline for my embellished pieces. I will most often turn a piece allowing the wood to push me in a direction that will allow me to make the best use of this particular piece of wood. I get the piece turned and let it sit in the shop for a while until I decide how I want to complete. This piece was turned and then a couple of months later I sprayed it with milk paint then after another month I carved through the milk paint to reveal the natural cherry it was then topcoated with clear satin spray.

New Direction
By Ric Taylor in Houston, TX.

“New Direction” is a piece of Mesquite wood that came from a dead tree on the King Ranch in southern Texas. The surface was dirty, rotted and perforated with worm and insect tunnels. When the bad surface wood was cut away, beautiful wood was exposed. In effect, the wood was reborn. The Mesquite was turned into a hollow form, and then it was cut apart with a top and bottom and several rings. The rings were carved and shaped, and then bleached. The pieces were put back together and the top and bottom were hand rubbed with an oil finish. The finished piece stands 15" x 6". The reborn w

Network started life on the lathe as a turned sugar maple sphere. The carving was then laid out on the surface of the sphere and the sphere was then hollowed on 20 axes. Final form was accomplished using rotary carving.
Finish, as always starts with a well sanded surface. Here the form was sanded to 600 grit before applying any finish. The finish used was a modified linseed oil finish. 2 layers were applied and allowed to cure. Final finish was accomplished by buffing the surface with the Beal system and then applying Micro-crystalline wax.

Weed Vase

This hollow vase is perfect for those “flowers” my grand-daughter brings me. The wood is hard maple that has been hollowed from the bottom and then plugged with a matching piece of wood. The small hole in the top is drilled to connect with the hollow interior. The wood is sealed with 2 coats of de-waxed shellac. Java Gel Stain is dabbed onto the surface at an angle with a piece of ribbed T-shirt to give a subtle spiraling effect in the surface stain. The pattern is cut into the wood using an ornamental lathe (which I built myself).

The wood is hard maple that is turned and hollowed. The exterior is sealed with 2 coats of de-waxed shellac. Java Gel Stain is dabbed onto the surface with a piece of cotton cloth. The pattern is cut into the wood using an ornamental lathe (which I built myself). The biggest challenge was making a custom chuck to hold the vase at various angles when cutting the butterfly patterns at the various locations on the surface. The final finish is sprayed on (Deft Semi-Gloss Clear Wood Finish). Size is 2.25” tall x 3” diameter.
