I needed bedroom furniture for my son Sean and I didn't have very much money and I did not want to buy furniture in pressboard. I met a couple who work in real estate and they had a little shop that sold used furniture that was left behind when sellers moved out. I paid $125.00 for a bedroom set (including a nightstand for myself) and set out to work on creating a bedroom set my son would like. He wanted the furniture to be painted black. The large pine dresser I scored was perfect to start on.
I washed it down with TSP and started working with wood filler on all of the dings and dents. I primed the dresser with Kilz2 and used Sherwin Williams 6229 Tempe Star homemade chalk paint on the top and then Valspar Chalk paint in Sherwin Williams 6258 Tricorn Black all over the body, top and drawers. (The interior drawers behind the doors are in Tempe Star for contrast.) Then with a 320 grit sandpaper I very lightly sanded the top to show the blue striations in the black. It was still black but with a very subtle blue that showed through slightly. I then used Sherwin Williams 6119 Antique White homemade chalk paint and highlighted the leaf pattern around the top of the dresser body. Then I used 2 coats of General Finishes Arm R Seal in satin over the entire piece; top, body and drawers.
Knobs and hinges were purchased brand new to give it a more updated look,
My son was very pleased with the way the dresser turned out and he did like the way some of the blue showed through the black on top.
