Head Board Recycled Bench

By Greg Lankston, Owner at Wood Magicians in Danville, IN.

Winning Category

This bench was built for a customer with a unique story behind it.  The customer's daughter had lost her father when she was a young girl.  The bed head board was one remaining piece of furniture she had that they wanted to somehow salvage and restore.  Thus being a piece her daughter could hold and display for years to come to remind her of her father.  They asked can you get creative and turn this into a display piece.

Redwood Keepsake Bench

By Renewal by T.H in Oswego, IL.

Winning Category

This outdoor bench is a truly repurposed item that has a unique story with many years of memories behind it. The redwood used to make this bench - in it's entirety - was once a children's playground set. The playgroud set was first disassembled and taken to our workshop. The pieces of the set were planed to the correct thickness. We needed all of the pieces to match so that they could later fit together like a puzzle piece. The boards were then cut, laid out and glued in a specific pattern to achieve the look we were going for.

Winning Category

This is a Sam Maloof inspired curly cherry rocking chair. It is made of highly figured cherry wood and highlighted with curly maple back braces and plugs. The entire chair is completely handmade and hand carved. The finish is what really makes the wood 'pop'. I use a mixture of tung oil, boiled linseed oil and of course General Finishes Arm-R-Seal.  This finish is strong and beautiful and very easy to apply, I use it on all of my chairs. Thank you, Dallas Gara.

Modular Stool Series

By Ryan Zimmerman in Erie, PA.

Winning Category

The furniture I create features varying irregular, geometric shapes that are the result of combining angular and rectilinear elements. With that in mind, I am interested in creating modular 'furniture systems'. These three pieces are identical forms, having no defined top or bottom. Each panel tapers back and forth an inch on either side; this treatment to the perimeter acts as a key for registering the units together into a longer bench form. Lastly finished with General Finishes Gel Topcoat, brushed on liberally with a foam brush and then wiped smooth with a rag.

Shell Back Chair

By Ryan Zimmerman in Erie, PA.

Winning Category

The furniture I create features varying irregular, geometric shapes that are the result of combining angular and rectilinear elements. I enjoy working in multiples and producing variations on a common design. This chair series was part of my thesis for my BFA in furniture design. Lastly finished with General Finishes Gel Topcoat, brushed on liberally with a foam brush and then wiped smooth with a rag. After experimenting with a slew of other finishes this has become my go to, it is user friendly, very forgiving and the results are great.

Regal Rocker

By Erin Tootsie Judd

Winning Category

This beautiful Sam Maloof style rocking chair was a built by a father/daughter duo with the construction completed in most by dad with a little help from daughter and finished by her. Crafted from warm walnut enriched by bold ebony accents, this chair was carefully coated in seven layers of Arm-R-Seal and a final finish of Satin Finishing Wax. This gentle and patient process produces a pleasing combination of warm and dark tones that suit the elegant nature of the rocker, as well as providing ample protection to preserve this piece for years to come.
