Pipe Box

By Nicholas J.V. Vanaria in Romeoville, IL.

Winning Category

c.1785 Pipe boxe made from plans from Federal funiture master Rob Milliard.

This box was made from Maple and built using the help of both my young son and daughter.

It was painted using Lamp Black milk paint as an undercoat, and then topped with Brick Red milk paint.

Then, it was sanded through to give it that distressed look.  In some places, I sanded all the way down to the wood, intentionally, to expose the fresh wood.  Then, I applied a coat of Cinnamon dye stain over it to give that fresh wood an aged look underneath it all.

Federal Inspired Cellarette

By Nicholas J.V. Vanaria in Romeoville, IL.

Winning Category

Built from Sapele Mahogany and inlaid with Maple and Walnut, this cellarette/bottle case was inspired by a Queen Anne version seen at Winterthur Museum.  I kept the proportions of the case, but changed it to Federal style instead.  All of the inlay was done from scratch with sand shading on the fans and homemade bandings and stringing

The finsh was a coat of Seal-A-Cell followed up by multiple coats of Arm-R-Seal, sanded between coats, then polished, and finished off with a wax.
