Secretary~Dresser~Patterns~Oh My!

By Kristen, Owner/Creative Designer at thatFLIPPINFURNITUREgirl in Portage, IN.

This piece has rapidly made its way to one of my all time favorite transformations! And it's a keeper, so yay!

It was sanded bare to remove 3, sometimes 4, layers of paint.  A base coat of General Finishes Antique Walnut gel stain was applied with a foam brush to the top, body and secretary sections.  Then two coats of Lamp Black milk paint by GF were hand painted over all exterior surfaces. A light sanding with 400 grit sandpaper between coats allows for a smooth, butter like finish.  (And no brush strokes!) The body was slightly distressed to allow the stain to peek through.

The drawers were given a base coat of GF Antique White milk paint.  I used scalloped edge Frog Tape to lay out my pattern.  One layer of Lamp Black was painted on and the tape immediately removed.  A good sanding of the drawers was done to give a slightly aged look.

The final step was sealing this beauty up with two coats of HPTC in Satin by General Finishes.

I was undecided on hardware until the end of this project.  I stumbled across these vintage copper pulls inside another piece I recently acquired from an estate sale.  I knew they were the "ones" the second I laid eyes on them!

One of the most satisfying parts of my job is when a piece just evolves as I work on it.  That's exactly what happened with this one, and probably why I love it so much!
