This beautiful, yet beat up, Bernhardt Sideboard was in need of some love. Prior to this project I hadn't used Milk Paint on any projects, though I was already solidly in love with Java Gel stain. This seemed like a great starter project for milk paint and Antique White was the perfect color.
I first had some repairs to make. Some loose veneer was peeled off and filled in with Bondi and I added stoppers to the drawers and doors. After cleaning thoroughly and putting 2 coats of primer on this mahogany beast, it was time to paint. I loved the beautiful leveling of the milk paint. After 2 coats, I was ready to lightly distress and add glazing.
The top was in beautiful shape, but the color needed to be deepened. In order to achieve the look I wanted, I lightly sanded the top to remove the sheen, but to carefully keep the color intact, and added 2 light coats of Java Gel Stain. The end result was beyond my expectations! Finally the piece was sealed with water based poly.
This beauty was hard to let go!
