Hibiscus flowers in bloom

By Derek McDonald in Rochester, NH.

Winning Category

Woods: Basswood ( tilia americana)

After some practice carving traditional forms that would be found on furniture or architectural elements, I stumbled across the work of Grinling Gibbons, a 17th century English carver, famous for his intricate lifelike cascades of flowers, fruits, and animals. I was immediately taken aback by the beauty and skill of his work and decided to try a project in his style. I chose my wife's favorite flower, the hibiscus, as the subject, and gave it to her as a gift for Christmas.

Federal hall table

By Derek McDonald in Rochester, NH.

Winning Category

Woods: Mahogany (Swietenia Macrophylla), White Oak Burl (Quercus Alba), Gaboon Ebony (Diospyros Crassiflora), Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus).

Inspired by the work of 18th-century furniture maker Thomas Seymour, this table aims to put a contemporary twist on a classic design. While the reeded and carved legs stay true to the original, the visually striking oak veneer leaves the piece far removed from the category of “old brown furniture”.

Woods: Ash (Fraxinus americana), Black Walnut (Juglans nigra), Bloodwood (Brosimum rubescens), Gaboon Ebony (Diospyros Crassiflora)

This oriental inspired chest of drawers is constructed with traditional joinery methods and all dovetails are hand-cut. The case is made of ash and was treated with the Japanese method of Shou Sugi Ban in which the wood is burnt and then oiled. The drawer fronts and cover are made from a beautiful two inch thick slab of air dried black walnut.
