This was a custom order for a client on the coast of North Carolina. The piece itself was imported from England and I can just picture it in my mind's eye sitting in an old coastal English pub.
I applied layers and layers of paint with the spray bottle technique to create an aged watercolor look that conjures images of it sitting on a dock exposed to the elements and salty air. The carved detailing on the drawer fronts definitely emulate mermaid tails so I wanted to highlight the coastal vibe with watery Carribean hues of turquoise. When I originally finished the paint process I still felt it lacked a little something so I mixed up some rust and added in areas to create character and interest... it was just what it needed. I shadowed crevices and corners with black wax to enhance the aged look we were going for.
