This gorgeous secretary set was a true labor of love! It was purchased from an older gentleman (late 80's) who told me it belonged to his grandmother, but unsure of the exact age. The desk had definitely seen better days. It had large gashes in the top and huge chunks of veneer missing. The chair was literally falling apart with dowels showing. I knew at once I had to have them! They now have taken up permanent residence in my office. I simply cannot part with this set!
The desktop was sanded down to a gorgeous bare wood, stained in Java Gel, and finished with Gel Topcoat. Thank God for Bondo and a good sander! The bottom was painted in Annie Sloan Coco, glazed with Van Dyke Brown in areas, distressed, and then highlighted with Modern Masters metallic paint. It was then sealed with General Finishes high performance top coat in Satin. The chair was a whole new challenge for me! I am a painter, not an upholsterer, and this one did give me a run for my money. I picked out a gorgeous Waverly fabric and I was determined to make it look good! This was my first upholstery job. And then there was the missing chunk on the side. Again, thanks to Bondo, it's as good as new! (well, almost!)
Who can resist the lovely lady lumps on this beauty?
