This cabinet has a history. My Grandpa built this cabinet when he was in high school in the late 1940s. This year my Grandpa passed away and thus was one of the few possessions that he had. My Grandpa was most proud about his service in the U.S.Marines. When it came down to what to do with the cabinet, and fighting the urge to do classic white, I thought I would paint this cabinet for my Dad. My Dad is a history teacher and he has a soft spot for veterans, probably a quality instilled in him by his Dad. So I decided what better way to capture my Grandpa's legacy than to paint this cabinet like the flag he fought to defend.
It it is painted in General Finishes Coastal Blue on the bottom half and adorned with free hand painted stars in Annie Sloan Pure White. The stars took about 4 hours total alone. The stars are intentionally imperfect and unique to represent the ubiquity of life. The top is painted in Annie Sloan Pure White and Emperor's Silk. The whole piece is distressed to show its built in character and age and then sealed in General Finishes Flat High Performance Sealer.
I hope that if my Grandpa was here that he would have been delighted to see this cabinet brought to life. I know my Dad will cherish it for the rest of his life.
