The Peacock Dresser

By Julie, Artist at Dandelions and Poppies

I love this style of dresser but the veneer on this was cracked and peeling in parts. I decided this tired old Victorian dresser needed a whole new look.

Removing the veneer carefully so as not to damage the wood underneath, my next step was to choose a colour scheme.

I love Coastal Blue Milk paint but knew I wanted a paint effect and chose peacock colours as my pallete. Using a technique I use when painting canvasses I blended coastal blue and various shades of teal and turquoise artist acrylic paint, painting fast and blending as I go I created a soft muted shade.

Oh but I didn't stop there! It needed some gold. The design was copied from a Victorian engraving, hand drawn and painted with artist acrylic paint.

Coastal Blue was used on the body of the piece and java gel on the top and lower wooden detail.

Sealed with Minwax polycrylic.

She now stands tall and proud as a peacock!
