This project was done by The ReStore Shop in Midleton, Cork In Ieland Our project is a collection of pieces that we feel represents our 'inner child' and hopefully will bring a smile! Each piece was hand painted from start to finish. For this project we found ourselves stepping out of our comfort zone of upcycling traditional pieces of furniture. We wanted to create a fun and enjoyable bedtime story setting for a child and parent. Inspired by Dr Seuss characters we designed , upcycled and crafted this quirky and novel set. We started with an old dining chair, an old side table, an old mirror frame, a bathroom mat, and added some lengths of white deal and armed with a stock of General Finishes Milk Paint , we were all set.
in line with the Dr Seuss theme we chose a palette of Corinth Blue, Snow White, Lamp Black and Holiday Red as the perfect combination to give us the look we wanted. We started with the old dining chair and used Snow White as the base, applied 3 coats and masking off the areas to create stripes in Lamp Black on the legs and Holiday Red for the top and bow tie. We used a shaggy bath mat to replicate the hairstyle of the 'Thing 1 and Thing 2' characters and to add a fun texture. Next was the Small 3 drawer side table. Using all 4 colours we painted alternate stripes on the drawers and side panels to create a dramatic effect. The next piece was the most challenging, we wanted to build a book case, but not just any boring old bookcase. We wanted to add en element of 'higgildy piggilidy' cartoon drama. We designed and built a set of square boxes with uneven support wedges and secured them together to give a 'discombobulated' look. They were then hand painted in Corinth Blue. For the final piece we took an old oval mirror frame, which was painted in Holiday Red and we cut a new back and using chalk board paint we created a fun blackboard, which was finished with an upside down cup handle as chalk holder and some red gingham ribbon for hanging. All the pieces were then finished with High Performance Top Coat in a flat finish to provide added protection. We hope you like it!
