Flaming June

By Bredonview Vintage, Owner in Dumbleton, Gloucestershire, GB

I rescued this sideboard from the top of the bonfire at our village cricket club.

She really was quite ugly - horrid brown colour, extremely ornate, big  clunky feet - I had no idea what to do with her!  She sat in my workshop for several months.  At one point, my husband told me to take her to the tip - there was no saving this particular piece!

Then I saw the painting Flaming June by Lord Deighton and inspiration struck.  I sanded back the top, filled in some of the carving with wood filler, did a few minor repairs and then set to work.  Flaming June herself is decoupaged onto the doors, and a crackle glaze effect added.  The wonderful hues of the painting became my colour palette and the top was stained with General Finishes Java Gel Stain and finished with HP Top Coat.  Lovely new glass knobs replaced the originals.  And, ta da, Flaming June was complete.  I hope you love her as much as I do!
