When I stumbled across a black, high gloss entertainment stand, I knew it had potential to fill the corner in our dining room as a lovely bar cabinet! After some sanding, I discovered that the blak lacquer paint was on this cabinet so heavy, that my only option to make this piece of furniture coordinate with my existing dining room set was to create an imidation wood grain finish. I sanded the cabinet down to rough it up as much as possible, brushed some light coats of primer to create some texture, and then finished with a few coats of General Finishes Gel Stain in Brown Mahogany. I finished off my project with a General Finishes Gel Topcoat, some new hardware, and brushed some silver leaf on the existing hinges and now have a piece of furniture that coordinates with my dining room set (also a General Finishes upcycle) and is a great conversation piece in my home.
