Jasmine the Vanity Desk

By Laura Kleber, Owner at My Home Matters, LLC in Valencia, PA.

When my 14-year old daughter asked for a vanity for her room, I knew I had the perfect piece waiting in my inventory...the piece that was just waiting for the right person...the piece that had the curves and the details that would make her shine in my daughter's room! We teamed up to collaborate on coloring and I so enjoyed having my daughter play a key role in the decision making. I used this as a teaching experience for her... and, while I may have had a few other suggestions, she was adamant about what she wanted in terms of colors. We chose Annie Sloan's beautiful Florence to match the accent wall behind her bed. From watching me in the past, my daugher instantly knew General Finishes Java Gel Stain was perfect for the top, once I sanded it down. We sealed the top with General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Satin and the body with Annie Sloan's Clear Wax. We highlighted the ribbon-like detail around the edges with Annie Sloan's Pure White and did the same with the legs. I used General Finishes Pearl Effects to ever-so-carefully highlight the details of the newly-sprayed hardware (sprayed in Rustoleum White) and added just a touch around the upper and lower legs. My daughter had great vision for this piece, and I welcomed the opportunity to be able to complete it for her. It's heartwarming that she appreciates a piece like this and could see the potential. I'm grateful to have had the pleasure of transforming this desk into a piece that can grow with my daughter and have the memories of collaborating in the summer before she enters high school!
