A desk from the future

By Pat Rios at The Wood Spa

A few months ago one of my customers told me her boss was trying to get rid of an old desk, and she immediatly thought of me. The next day, before her boss had time to change her mind, I was carrying that baby home. I love my customers!

It was a beautiful, super sturdy Dixie desk, that showed all signs of about two decades of use. Scratches, missing pieces of veneer, kids doodles inside the drawers, little holes and marks everywhere.

This gem stayed in my storage unit for some time while I waited for the right opportunity and inspiration to strike. A few weeks ago, I was given a kit of metallic paints to try on a project of my choice, and I immediatly remembered I had just the piece for it.

This desk is 49"L, 18"W and 30"H and it has seven drawers.

I painted it with Modern Masters Metal Effects bronze reactive paint and blue patina aging solution. I also dry brushed some silver paint, and applied dark brown glaze over the metallic areas. The top was sanded down and restained with General Finishes Java Gel Stain, and the inside of all drawers were painted in teal.

When someone called it "a desk from the future", I thought it was a perfect description.
