Curbside Buffet

By Hazel Mae Home at Hazel Mae Home LLC

Did you put this buffet on the curb? Did your neighbor? Did you see it on the side of the road and drive right by?

Allison didn't.

Despite the worn top, nicked up front leg and dated look - Allison saw its potential and made her husband and brother carry it home!

Be like Allison and save old furniture.

I started the redesign by sanding down the top and drawer front. The wood is quarter sawn oak. The way they cut the wood shows the internal tree rings as "rays" and "flames". The cost of this wood is sometimes twice as much as plain sawn wood. It is truly beautiful and I knew that the drawer front couldn't be painted. Lucky for me, Allison let me run with it and do what I thought was right.

I stained the top and drawer with a mix of General Finishes Antique Walnut and Java Gel Stains and finished with three coats of General Finishes Gloss Top Coat. The photos don't do justice to the beautiful shine.

I cleaned the body and painted in Annie Sloan's Napoleonic Blue. This has been a popular color for me lately. I painted this dresser, this dresser and this accent table in Napoleonic Blue.

It is finished with Miss Mustard Seed's Furniture Wax. And the original brass hardware was scrubbed and buffed to a beautiful shine. This was truly a diamond in the rough....a Cinderella story.
