Rekkid Cabby & 45 Cabby

By Ryan Zimmerman in Erie, PA.

Winning Category

The furniture I create features varying irregular, geometric shapes that are the result of combining angular and rectilinear elements. With that in mind, I am interested in creating modular 'furniture systems'. I see these two cabinets a unit. The one is a vinyl record cabinet featuring three irregular drawers. The other is intended to house 45's or 7" records in it's drawer. When brought together they fit together seamlessly, however I much rather prefer the negative space they create. They are both constructed with the same combination of figured cherry and black walnut.

Federal Inspired Cellarette

By Nicholas J.V. Vanaria in Romeoville, IL.

Winning Category

Built from Sapele Mahogany and inlaid with Maple and Walnut, this cellarette/bottle case was inspired by a Queen Anne version seen at Winterthur Museum.  I kept the proportions of the case, but changed it to Federal style instead.  All of the inlay was done from scratch with sand shading on the fans and homemade bandings and stringing

The finsh was a coat of Seal-A-Cell followed up by multiple coats of Arm-R-Seal, sanded between coats, then polished, and finished off with a wax.

Pipe Box

By Nicholas J.V. Vanaria in Romeoville, IL.

Winning Category

c.1785 Pipe boxe made from plans from Federal funiture master Rob Milliard.

This box was made from Maple and built using the help of both my young son and daughter.

It was painted using Lamp Black milk paint as an undercoat, and then topped with Brick Red milk paint.

Then, it was sanded through to give it that distressed look.  In some places, I sanded all the way down to the wood, intentionally, to expose the fresh wood.  Then, I applied a coat of Cinnamon dye stain over it to give that fresh wood an aged look underneath it all.

The idea behind this piece was to recreate a primitive pie safe that reminded me of my vacations as a child in the Smokey Mountains. It was created using all scrap clear pine with basic woodworking tools. It's constructed entirely with mortise and tenon and dowel pin joinery. There's a secret stash compartment hidden under the top piece that is accessible when removing the drawer. Gotta hide your valuables!

Oak Ice Box Wine Cabinet

By Greg Lankston, Owner at Wood Magicians in Danville, IN.

Winning Category

I built this wine cabinet from solid red oak.  I wanted to make it unique and a one of a kind piece.  So to make it really stand out, I custom made the trim and shaping of many pieces.  Then to really add the wow factor I added a custom designed carved toe kick of grape vines and doors with grape clusters.  And to top it off I made a set of custom matched wine glasses with matching grapes laser etched onto them for a totally matched set.  To make it a final perfect apperance I turned to General Finishes as I do on every project.

Winning Category

This vintage storage box is made using pine boards. The top is a plywood board covered with foam and a neutral cotton fabric. The sides were assembled by gluing boards together and then cutting to size.  The 10 degree angle cut gives it a dramatic effect.  The edges were framed with an "L" shape molding and nailed into place. To ensure the top did not come off when used as a seat, we added a frame to the underside of the top.

Living Room Transformation Built in Bookcase Fireplace Surround

By Laura in COLLEYVILLE, TX.

Winning Category

My sister had just bought a new house and really need help with her living room with lacked personality. One lonely fireplace with tile around it. With no professional background in wood working (I did not even own a table saw for this project), added a fireplace surround complete with stacked stone and a very large built in Media Bookcase. This bookcase was over 100" tall after it was complete. I built in three separate sections which enable me to spray most of it with Snow white milk paint prior to installing.

Box

So what do you do with when you find a 67 year old piece of pine from a rustic cabin being remodel in the dumpster? You take it home and clean it up. Then you try and design something that is useful and will allow you to remember the summer camp you attended as a kid, Owasippe. I decided on making a keepsake box.
